Jack tries to persuade Becker to consider evacuations in the Northern States, but he rejects again again. Based on Jack’s study, Jack’s and Rapson’s teams, working with NASA meteorologist Janet Tokada, create a forecast model. Rapson finds that Jack’s theories are valid after many buoys in the Atlantic Ocean reveal a significant reduction in ocean temperature. Professor Terry Rapson of the Hedland Centre in Scotland befriends Jack because of his belief in the impending climate change. Jack shares his study proving that climate change could create an ice age at a UN summit in New Delhi, but US Vice President Raymond Becker ignores his fears. When an American paleoclimatologist named Jack Hall and his colleagues Frank and Jason are drilling for ice-core samples in the Larsen Ice Shelf for the NOAA, the ice shelf begins to fall apart.

When it was first released, movie got mixed reviews, with critics complimenting the special effects but condemning the script and various scientific mistakes. It is the highest-grossing Hollywood picture made in Canada, having been shot in Toronto and Montreal (adjusted for inflation).

The film was a huge commercial success, being the sixth highest-grossing picture of 2004. It was originally scheduled for release in the summer of 2003. The Day After Tomorrow premiered in Mexico City on May 17, 2004, and was released in the United States on May 28, 2004. A series of dramatic weather events causes global cooling and a new ice age to begin.

It portrays the disastrous climatic consequences of disrupting the North Atlantic Ocean circulation.
